This is how you controlled the police, Mr Fadnavis?
What was the Opposition doing all these years?
With each passing day, serious crimes against women are reported from some or the other place in the country and the state. Every time, such incident is reported, society erupts into anger and extreme reactions. Especially, when the matter is about rape and murder of a woman. Politicians are at forefront to grab their share of publicity and probably votes by giving sharp reactions. Everyone does lip service and forget the matter.
This time, it is the gang rape of a woman from Ahemdnagar. The case is four years old. But has come in limelight now because a video of few people brutally thrashing the victim and her husband is making rounds on social media. The culprits not only removed all their cloths but also poured petrol on them. They have been threatening the couple to withdraw the complaint of gang rape, which allegedly involves a police official from Ahemdnagar, as one of the accused.
Immediately, after the video surfaced on the social media, society reacted to it in the usual manner. Politicians too, pounced on the matter to earn brownie points. Leader of Opposition on Assembly Devendra Fadnavis delivered a lofty and emotional speech in the House on deteriorating law and order situation, calling for drastic improvements in judiciary and police administration.
How much truth and honesty did he hold while sermoning? While calling for paradigm changes in the system and strictest of all punishment for the culprits, Fadnavis forgot that he was the Home Minister for all these years when the heinous crime took place in 2016 and Ahmednagar police pushed it under the carpet. Since a senior police official was one of the accused of gang rape, the entire police administration rallied behind him and pressurised the victim to withdraw the complaint.
Fadnavis, who made tall claims of fearless society and enforcement of law and order during his regime, couldn’t get information about such a grave crime! And now, shedding crocodile’s tears. So are the other politicians, whether it is Nilam Gorhe of Shiv Sena or Balasaheb Thorat of Congress. It was not just the government, the Opposition parties, which are in power today, turned a blind eye to such a heinous crime.
Thorat, a strong leader from Ahmednagar reacted to it after four years. The torch bearer of women liberation and empowerment Nilam Gorhe too didn’t find any merit in the case to take it up and bring the culprit to justice. None of them took up the matter when the victim and her husband were fighting a lone battle against the entire police administration. They pursued the matter till Supreme Court, where they proved their case beyond doubt. Realising that the law will soon catch up on them, the accused resorted to the gruesome act to torture the victim. And the fact that, neither Fadnavis, the then Chief Minister and Home Minister nor any stalwart leader from the then Opposition raised an eye brow, is glaring proof of who runs the administration.
