‘Public Service Is The Greatest Test Of Governance’: PM Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister

Modi Sets New Benchmark In Indian Politics

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday entered a new chapter in Indian political history by becoming the country’s longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister.

The milestone came as Modi completed 4,399 uninterrupted days in office, moving ahead of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, whose elected tenure after the first general election had stood as the benchmark for decades.

The achievement coincides with the completion of 12 years of the Modi-led government at the Centre, a period that has seen the BJP emerge as the dominant force in national politics.

“‘Only Dedication And Discipline Earn People’s Trust'”

Marking the occasion, Modi reflected on his years in public life and highlighted the importance of service-oriented governance.

In a message shared on social media, he said, “Public service remains the greatest test of good governance and only those who work with commitment, discipline and a sense of duty can earn the trust of the people.”

The Prime Minister also emphasized that leadership must remain focused on citizens’ aspirations and national development.

Three Consecutive Electoral Victories

Since first taking office in May 2014, Modi has led the BJP to victory in three successive Lok Sabha elections, winning mandates in 2014, 2019 and 2024.

With this achievement, he became the first Prime Minister after Nehru to secure three consecutive terms through general elections, strengthening his position as one of the most influential political leaders in contemporary India.

While former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi spent more years in office overall, her tenure was divided into separate periods, making Modi the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister.

Infrastructure And Development Drive Defined The Era

Over the past 12 years, the government has overseen several high-profile infrastructure and development initiatives across the country.

Among the projects highlighted by the administration are the new Parliament complex, the Central Vista redevelopment, Kartavya Path, the expansion of Vande Bharat train services, the Statue of Unity, the commissioning of INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail connectivity project, Noida International Airport, the Namo Bharat regional transit system and the Ganga Expressway.

These projects have been projected by the government as symbols of modernization and long-term economic growth.

NDA Gathers To Celebrate Milestone

To commemorate the occasion, leaders of the National Democratic Alliance are meeting in New Delhi, where a resolution congratulating Modi is expected to be adopted.

The gathering is likely to include senior BJP leaders, chief ministers, deputy chief ministers and representatives of alliance partners from across the country.

Apart from recognising the Prime Minister’s record-breaking tenure, the meeting is expected to review governance achievements and discuss future policy priorities.
