Backward Class Commission yet to start functioning

Mumbai: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gopichand Padalkar criticised Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government today for just making tall promises by announcing Rs 450 crore for the Backward Class Commission and implementing nothing.

The BJP leader held ministers Vijay Wadettiwar and Ajit Pawar responsible for the failure to work for the Other Backward Class (OBC) community.

“Relief and Rehabilitation minister Vijay Wadettiwar and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar received praise for announcing Rs 450 crore for the Backward Class Commission. However, they have sanctioned only Rs 4.5 crore. The Commission has not even permitted to spend these funds. The Commission has no office or staff and it is not functional. The researchers sat in Solapur and Commission is in Pune. How do they work like this? Wadettiwar just saw his gain in the announcement and did nothing to make the Commission function,” Padalkar, the Member of Upper House (MLC) of BJP, said.

The BJP leader came down heavily on Wadettiwar for paying lip service to the OBC community. “He represents the OBC community in the ministry and does nothing. On January 17, there is a court hearing on the OBC issue and it had asked the state government to an interim report on the OBC reservation. However, the Commission is not even made functional and hence Wadettiwar said he would have to seek three months from the court to submit the report,” Padalkar said.

Questioning the MVA government on OBC reservation, the BJP MLC said the community would end up getting no benefit.

“Due to the delay by the state government on submitting an interim report on OBC reservation, the community perhaps end up not getting the benefit of it in the coming elections. This would help the established leaders from the ruling parties. Therefore, I appeal to the community to raise these questions before every MVA minister and let them answer,” he said.
