New Delhi: O R Shallam, a senior citizen from Panaliar, Jowai, West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya has penned a complaint letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari urging them to urgently fix the National Highway-6 (NH-6) stretch between Shillong and Jowai. Shallam argues that the NH-6 formerly known as NH-44 is the only road link that connects the North-Eastern states and is in need of urgent repairs.

Criticising the pathetic and unconstitutional management and maintenance of roads highways in the State of Meghalaya by the current NPP led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, Shallam alleges that the state government has failed each and every section of residents in the state and caused immense inconveniences to the public at large and at all times.

The National Highway-6 (the then NH-44) which is a single bloodline roadway connecting four major North Eastern states namely, Assam, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura via Meghalaya. The road is currently in a pathetic and deplorable condition particularly the section between Shillong – Jowai which is completely filled and submerged under unmotorable zones filled with potholes causing horrific and hourly traffic snarl and jams at a daily basis besides causing fatal roads accidents leading to a daily loss of movable property and posing life threatening situations.

Meghalaya’s state capital Shillong is the only centre for education, health as well as trade and commerce hub in the entire state and whereas, residents of Jaintia Hills region which is the eastern side of the state needs to attend to their daily businesses, health check-ups and studies besides other essential necessities through the NH- 6. People from the Jaintia Hills region however have to unnecessarily face utmost difficulties and hardships due to the horrific condition of the said road.

In-spite of the hue and cry by the residents on the said life-threatening issue, the State Government however remain adamant and unresponsive and leaving the public to suffer havoc and chaos to the highest level in the history of road transportation, adds Shallam.

“As citizens in this part of the country we are helpless and are running out of options and alternatives but to write this complaint to you, while most humbly requesting your authority to save us from this mayhem and attend to our basic needs to have a road highway free from risk and inconveniences and most importantly to exercise our rights to good roads and highways. Thanking you in anticipation while waiting for the Government of India to rescue us from this so unwanted dilemma, remarked Shallam in his complaint letter.
