Baramati Bypoll: Will Uddhav Thackeray Back Unopposed Election for Sunetra Pawar?

Political activity in Maharashtra has intensified ahead of the Baramati by-election, with strong indications that major parties may favour an uncontested poll. Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar recently held a discussion with Uddhav Thackeray, signalling efforts to reach a consensus.

Baramati, known as a long-time stronghold of the Pawar family, could witness a rare political understanding if opposition parties decide not to field candidates.

Push for Unopposed Election Gains Momentum

Sources suggest that leaders from the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) and the ruling alliance are in favour of an uncontested election. The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) has also hinted it may not contest against a member of the Pawar family.

However, the situation remains fluid as the Indian National Congress is still weighing its options. State Congress chief Harshawardhan Sapkal has indicated that the party could field a candidate if needed, keeping the possibility of a contest alive.

Why Is This Bypoll Important?

The bypoll was necessitated after the tragic death of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in an air crash earlier this year.

Sunetra Pawar, who took oath as Deputy CM following his passing, is expected to contest from Baramati. As per rules, she must win an election within six months to continue in her post.

She currently handles key departments including State Excise, Sports and Youth Welfare, Minority Affairs, and Waqf.

What Role Will Uddhav Thackeray Play?

The final outcome may depend heavily on Uddhav Thackeray’s stand. His decision could determine whether the bypoll turns into a consensus-driven election or a competitive political battle.

Sources say the recent conversation between Sunetra Pawar and Thackeray was aimed at building a common understanding among key political players.

When Will Voting Take Place?

The election schedule has already been announced. Nomination filing will close on April 6, scrutiny will be held on April 7, and candidates can withdraw nominations until April 9.

If more than one candidate remains in the fray, voting will take place on April 23, and the results will be declared on May 4.
