The Baramati by-election has taken a dramatic turn after Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Sunetra Pawar filed her nomination and made a strong appeal to opposition parties to allow an unopposed victory.
Calling it the “toughest election” of her life, Sunetra Pawar said efforts are underway to reach out to Congress leadership, including Mallikarjun Kharge, to avoid a contest in the prestigious constituency.
“This is the toughest election of my life; such a time should not come to anyone. This election is not mine alone; this is the election of all Baramati people,” she said, adding that discussions are being initiated through senior leader Praful Patel to convince Congress.

The bypoll has gained massive attention as it comes in the backdrop of the political legacy of Ajit Pawar. Leaders within the ruling alliance have acknowledged that Baramati elections have always been closely associated with him.
Maharashtra Minister Aditi Sunil Tatkare said, “We never imagined Baramati elections without Ajit Pawar. This is a unique situation, and there is a sentiment that the election should be unopposed.”

Meanwhile, BJP leaders have turned up the heat on the Congress. Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule said the situation would test Congress’s political stand.
“The public of Maharashtra is watching what role Congress will play. If they contest, it will be their biggest defeat,” he said, indicating confidence in Sunetra Pawar’s victory.

Senior leader Chhagan Bhujbal also backed Sunetra Pawar, claiming that multiple parties are likely to support her candidature.
“All parties are supporting her. We will hold discussions with Congress. She will get elected,” Bhujbal said, reinforcing the push for a consensus outcome.
