“Each Vote Matters”: Himanta Biswa Sarma Urges High Voter Turnout as Assam Votes in Crucial Election

As polling began across Assam on Thursday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called on voters to come out in large numbers and exercise their democratic rights.

In a message posted on X, Sarma said, “Today, Assam votes and each voice matters, each vote matters in the path of building a better Assam. On the occasion of this festival of democracy, I urge everyone to come out and vote in large numbers to strengthen democracy and take Assam to new heights.”

Polling Begins Across 126 Constituencies

Voting commenced at 7 AM in a single-phase election covering all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam. The electoral process is also underway in Kerala and Puducherry, making it a significant day in India’s electoral calendar.

Large numbers of voters were seen standing in queues outside polling booths early in the morning, indicating strong participation in what is being viewed as a crucial election.

Over 2.5 Crore Electors and 722 Candidates in Fray

Assam has over 2.5 crore eligible voters participating in this election. Out of 2,50,54,463 electors, 1,25,31,552 are male voters and 1,25,22,593 are female voters. There are also 318 voters in the transgender category and 63,423 service voters.

The electorate includes 6,42,314 young voters aged between 18 and 19 years, while 2,50,006 voters are above 80 years of age. Additionally, 2,05,085 persons with disabilities are eligible to vote.

A total of 722 candidates are contesting, making the political contest intense and competitive.

Extensive Arrangements by Election Commission

The Election Commission of India has made elaborate arrangements to ensure free and fair polling.

Webcasting facilities have been deployed in all 31,490 polling stations, including 31,486 main polling stations and 4 auxiliary polling stations. A total of 1,51,132 polling personnel have been deployed.

For smooth conduct of voting, 41,320 Ballot Units, 43,975 Control Units, and 43,997 VVPAT machines have been arranged, along with reserves for emergency use.

BJP Seeks Third Term, Congress Leads Opposition Alliance

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA is aiming to return to power for a third consecutive term in Assam. Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress has formed a six-party alliance to challenge the ruling government.

This election is expected to play a key role in shaping the political future of the state, with both sides making strong claims and mobilising voters aggressively.
