Families of victims from the tragic Air India Flight AI-171 crash have approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding immediate access to crucial flight data in a renewed push for transparency in the investigation.
The emotional appeal highlights growing dissatisfaction among relatives over delays in the probe and limited communication from authorities following one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters.
Families Demand Access to Crucial Evidence
In their letter, families stressed that the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR), commonly referred to as black boxes, hold the key to understanding what led to the crash.
They described the data as essential to uncovering the sequence of events and determining whether technical failure or other factors were responsible. While seeking public disclosure, they also suggested that the findings should at least be shared directly with affected families if full release is not possible.
Deadly Crash Still Raises Questions
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Air India crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in June last year.
The disaster claimed 260 lives, including passengers and people on the ground, with only one survivor. The scale of the tragedy continues to haunt families, many of whom say they are still searching for clear answers about what happened in the final moments of the flight.
Frustration Over Communication Gaps
Relatives have expressed concern over what they describe as poor communication from both the airline and associated authorities. During a recent meeting attended by several affected families, participants highlighted that responses to queries were often delayed or limited to email communication.
Some pointed out that many families, especially those from rural backgrounds, find it difficult to rely solely on digital communication and have called for more accessible support systems, including direct helplines.
Appeal Sent to Top Authorities
Apart from the Prime Minister, copies of the letter are being shared with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu, and senior officials of investigative bodies.
The move signals a coordinated effort by families to push for accountability and more direct engagement with decision-makers overseeing the probe.
Investigation Continues Without Final Answer
The inquiry into the crash is being handled by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau under global aviation norms. Both black boxes were recovered soon after the crash and are being analysed by experts.
Initial findings indicated a sudden loss of engine power shortly after takeoff, but investigators have not yet confirmed the exact reason behind the sequence of events. Authorities maintain that the probe is ongoing and will be conducted thoroughly before any final conclusions are released.
Why are families demanding black box data
Families believe that the cockpit recordings and flight data are crucial to understanding the exact cause of the crash and want clarity on whether technical faults or other factors were involved.
Has the investigation revealed the cause of the crash
No final cause has been confirmed yet. While initial findings point to a sudden loss of engine thrust, investigators are still analysing all available evidence before reaching a conclusion.
