Mumbai’s Lake Levels Surge After Consistent Monsoon Showers; Water Supply Outlook Brightens

Mumbai: A sustained spell of monsoon rains has brought significant relief to Mumbai’s water reserves, with the city’s key lakes witnessing a sharp rise in storage levels. Early morning data recorded on Thursday shows that the total water stock across the seven major reservoirs supplying Mumbai has risen to 10.63 lakh million litres, equivalent to 73.50% of their total usable capacity.

This notable improvement in lake levels has eased concerns of water shortages in the city, which had been looming earlier this year due to low pre-monsoon stocks. Authorities believe that if the rainfall trend continues, Mumbai may not face any supply constraints for the rest of the year.

One of the major developments was seen at Modak Sagar, which reached its full storage capacity and began overflowing on July 9 at 6:27 am. The dam’s water level hit 163.17 metres, leading to the opening of one of its gates to safely release excess water. Modak Sagar alone holds a significant portion of Mumbai’s daily supply and its overflow signals a strong monsoon response in its catchment area.

Upper Vaitarna, another key reservoir, also recorded healthy numbers, with its water level at 601.68 metres — amounting to 74.02% of live storage. Similarly, Tansa Lake stood at 78.76%, and Middle Vaitarna neared the brim with 93.22% of its capacity filled.

Smaller lakes such as Tulsi are nearing full capacity, reporting 99.43% storage, while Vihar Lake has also shown consistent gains. The city’s largest reservoir, Bhatsa, is gradually increasing its reserves and currently holds 4.54 lakh million litres, with scope for further replenishment in the coming days.

Compared to the same date last year, the lake levels reflect a dramatic increase. In July 2024, the combined stock across all lakes was just 3.13 lakh million litres, meaning this year’s reserves have more than tripled. Officials attribute the improvement to well-distributed monsoon activity, especially in catchment regions.

Rainfall measured at the Bhandup Complex, responsible for treating and distributing water to the city, stood at 8 mm today, contributing to a seasonal total of 694 mm so far. The favorable weather has also prompted continuous monitoring and controlled discharge from overflowing lakes to prevent flooding.
