Mumbai witnessed another day of relentless monsoon showers on Sunday as heavy rainfall continued to pound the city and surrounding districts, creating widespread disruption. Waterlogged roads, traffic congestion, flooding in low-lying areas and a major road cave-in added to the difficulties faced by commuters, while weather authorities warned that the intense spell of rain is far from over.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has continued its Red Alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall along with strong winds over the coming hours.
Heavy Showers Slow Traffic Across Mumbai
Continuous rain accompanied by gusty winds affected traffic movement on several major roads across the city. Commuters experienced slow-moving traffic on important stretches, including the Western Express Highway, where visibility and water accumulation led to delays during the day.
Despite persistent rainfall, some arterial roads such as the Santacruz Highway remained operational, although motorists drove cautiously due to wet road conditions and reduced visibility.
Waterlogging Hits Kurla And Nalasopara
Rainwater accumulated rapidly in several low-lying areas, leaving many roads partially submerged. Visuals from Kurla Terminus showed extensive waterlogging around the transport hub, making it difficult for vehicles to move and raising concerns over commuter safety.
Flooding also affected several locations in Nalasopara, including Central Park, Tulinj Bridge and Alliance Hospital Road. The accumulated rainwater slowed vehicular movement and created difficulties for residents travelling through the area.
Municipal teams deployed drainage pumps at multiple locations in an effort to remove stagnant water and restore normal traffic flow.
Road Cave-In Reported At Bhandup
One of the most serious incidents of the day occurred on LBS Marg in Bhandup (West), where a large portion of the road suddenly caved in near the Asian Paints premises.
According to civic officials, the collapse involved an area measuring nearly 100 feet by 100 feet, where excavation work was underway. A tempo parked at the site slipped into the collapsed section after the ground gave way.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident. However, the affected stretch was immediately secured, and officials began assessing the damage while restricting movement in the area.
Tree Falls And Safety Concerns Rise
The continuous rainfall has also resulted in an increase in tree fall incidents across Mumbai and nearby regions. Cases have been reported from areas including Dadar, Churchgate and Thane, prompting emergency response teams to clear roads and ensure public safety.
Officials have appealed to residents to remain cautious, especially in areas vulnerable to flooding and falling trees.
IMD Warns Of More Heavy Rain
The IMD has maintained a Red Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and adjoining districts. The weather agency has predicted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds reaching 50–60 kmph at isolated locations.
Authorities have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, monitor official weather updates and remain alert as the active monsoon system continues to impact the region.
Civic Agencies On High Alert
Municipal authorities and disaster management teams remain on standby across Mumbai to respond to emergencies, clear waterlogged roads and monitor vulnerable locations.
With forecasts indicating that heavy rain may continue over the next several hours, officials are urging residents to exercise caution and cooperate with emergency advisories until weather conditions improve.
