Heavy monsoon showers continued to batter Mumbai on Wednesday, bringing fresh waterlogging, traffic disruptions and transport delays across several parts of the city. After relentless rainfall over the past two days, residents woke up to another wet morning as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of more intense rain in the coming days.
Orange Alert Issued for Mumbai and Nearby Districts
The IMD has placed Mumbai, Thane and Raigad under an Orange Alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Weather officials have indicated that intense monsoon activity is likely to persist until at least Friday as weather systems remain active along the Konkan coast.
Waterlogging Returns Across Key Areas
Continuous overnight showers led to water accumulation in several low-lying areas, affecting normal movement across the city. Localities including Dadar, Sion, Parel, Byculla, Colaba, Marine Lines, Andheri, Kurla, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Mulund witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall, with civic authorities monitoring vulnerable locations.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed emergency teams and disaster response personnel in flood-prone areas to respond quickly if conditions worsen.
Andheri Subway Closed Again After Flooding
The Andheri subway was once again shut for vehicular traffic after heavy rainfall caused severe waterlogging overnight. Police diverted vehicles to alternate routes to prevent accidents and ease congestion. The subway had already experienced flooding earlier this week, and fresh rain forced another closure.
Harbour Line Services Briefly Affected
Commuters on Mumbai’s Harbour Line also faced inconvenience after an overhead equipment (OHE) fault near Nerul disrupted train operations during the early morning hours. Services between Panvel and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) were temporarily affected before railway engineers restored the equipment and resumed normal operations.
Despite restoration, many passengers reported delays and overcrowding during the morning peak hours due to the combined impact of the technical fault and heavy rainfall.
No Holiday Announced for Schools
Authorities have not announced any closure of schools or colleges in Mumbai. Students and parents have been advised to follow updates issued by their respective educational institutions, while civic officials continue to monitor the evolving weather situation.
The IMD has urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall, stay away from waterlogged roads and weakened structures, and keep track of official weather advisories as monsoon activity is expected to remain strong across Mumbai and adjoining regions.
