Mumbai Rains Trigger Fresh Safety Scare: Two College Girls Electrocuted After Live Wire Falls Into Water in Nerul

Heavy rainfall continued to disrupt normal life across Mumbai and neighbouring areas on Wednesday, with a shocking electrocution incident reported from Nerul in Navi Mumbai, raising fresh concerns over public safety during the monsoon.

Two Students Receive Electric Shock on Waterlogged Road

The incident took place near the LP Bridge in front of Bikaner Sweets, where a wire reportedly developed a short circuit. According to preliminary information, electric current spread through the rainwater, and two college students walking through the flooded stretch accidentally came in contact with it.

The girls collapsed on the road after suffering the electric shock, creating panic among people in the area.

Bystander Rescues Girls Using Tree Branch

Videos from the spot show the two students lying on the rain-soaked road while traffic came to a standstill. In a courageous effort, a passerby used a long tree branch to pull the girls away from the live current without touching them directly, helping prevent further injuries.

Soon after the rescue, both students were taken to DY Patil Hospital in an autorickshaw for emergency treatment. Their current medical condition has not yet been officially confirmed.

Back-to-Back Rain-Related Incidents Raise Alarm

The incident comes just a day after an 11-year-old boy, Vihan Shrivastav, lost his life in Chembur when a nearly 60-year-old Peepal tree collapsed on his school bus during heavy rain. Four other children, aged between four and 12 years, were also injured. One child remains in the ICU and is expected to undergo surgery, while two others are receiving treatment for minor injuries. Another child was discharged after medical evaluation.

Flooding Slows Traffic Across Navi Mumbai

Heavy showers also caused severe waterlogging in several parts of Navi Mumbai. Sections of the busy Sion-Panvel Highway were submerged, leading to slow-moving traffic and long delays for commuters travelling between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

With heavy rainfall continuing across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the latest incidents have once again highlighted the risks posed by exposed electrical infrastructure, ageing trees and waterlogged roads during the monsoon season. Authorities are expected to assess the situation and take necessary safety measures to prevent similar accidents.
