Mumbai On High Alert As Heavy Rain Continues; 4.28-Metre High Tide Today Raises Flooding Concerns, Check Full Details

Mumbai continued to battle relentless monsoon showers on Friday, with authorities stepping up preparedness ahead of a major high tide expected later in the day. Civic officials have warned that the combination of intense rainfall and high tidal activity could significantly affect the city’s drainage system, increasing the risk of flooding in several vulnerable locations.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has maintained an Orange Alert for Mumbai and nearby suburbs, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph.

4.28-Metre High Tide Expected This Afternoon

According to the latest tidal forecast, the Arabian Sea is expected to witness a high tide of 4.28 metres at 2:18 pm on Friday. Another high tide measuring 3.68 metres is forecast at 2:09 am on Saturday.

Officials have cautioned that if heavy rain coincides with the afternoon high tide, rainwater may not drain into the sea efficiently, resulting in rapid water accumulation across several low-lying parts of Mumbai.

Waterlogging Reported Across Several Areas

Continuous overnight rainfall has already affected normal life in many parts of the city. Waterlogging has been reported from Sion, Dadar, Hindmata, Parel, Andheri, Goregaon, Charkop and Worli, while traffic movement slowed considerably during the morning commute as several roads remained submerged.

Emergency teams have been deployed to monitor flood-prone locations and clear stormwater drains wherever required.

IMD Maintains Orange Alert

The weather department has warned that rainfall activity is likely to remain intense throughout the day. Along with heavy showers, gusty winds are expected to impact coastal and open areas.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged roads, remain cautious near the coastline, and follow official weather advisories until conditions improve.

Civic Agencies On Standby

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), disaster management teams, police, and other emergency agencies remain on high alert across the city. Officials are closely monitoring rainfall intensity, tidal conditions and vulnerable locations to ensure a swift response in case of any emergencies.

With the monsoon remaining active over Mumbai, authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant, especially during the afternoon high tide period when the possibility of flooding is expected to be the highest.
