Mumbai couple to get second jab after 6 months thanks to negligence of UP health official

@nag228

Mumbai: Thanks to the bungling by the vaccination registration officer back at the Primary Health Care (PHC) Centre of Baragaon, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, a couple from Mumbai will have to wait for another six months to get their second jab.

As per laid down government norms for vaccination, the second dose is given to a person after completion of 83 days from the date of the first dose of Covishield. Now the couple from Dahisar in Mumbai have to bear the punishment for the mistake of the registration officer in vaccination centre in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

Ram Bahadur Singh 49, residents of Dahisar and his wife Neelam Singh 47, took the first dose of Covishield vaccine on May, 3, this year at the Primary Health Care Centre in Baragaon, Varanasi, UP. After taking the first dose the couple returned to Mumbai.

After 83 days, when both the couple went to take the second dose at a centre in Dahisar.

The couple were refused for the second dose by saying that the 83 days gap was not completed after the first dose therefore they cannot give them the second shot of vaccine.  They also said that as per the registration date the couple got their first dose on July 22.

The couple showed their first vaccine letter which they received after taking the first dose at a centre in Varanasi but the officer said that they have to go by the date which is displayed in the system.

While talking to News 21 Ram Bahadur said “I have health issues related to diabetes and neurology. I have to travel to Churchgate for work. If I had got the second dose today, I would have got protection from Corona and also a local pass to go to the office.

When News 21 tried to contact Anita Prakash, registration officer at the vaccine centre in Varanasi she refused to comment on this.

Actually, the couple took first shot of vaccine on May 3, but their details were taken for registration at that time, but the officials did not register immediately. After returning to Mumbai, despite Ram Bahadur making several calls to the concerned official at Varanasi vaccination centre, the official was so careless that he did not even take any cognisance of the repeated calls.

After repeated requests by Ram Bahadur Singh, the official registered them for the jab on July 22. This is the reason that the second dose, which was to be given in July, will now be given in November.

A senior official from health department said, “Vaccination is a systematic process, after the first dose, the system automatically generates a date with gap of 83 days between the first and second dose.  In this case, we can’t do anything about it at the moment. I would appeal to people that if anyone taking the first dose in the village or anywhere, then they should check and demand for the registration on the same date, otherwise they may have to face problems in the future.
