New Delhi: The proposed Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Bill, 2020 as cleared by the state cabinet at its virtual meeting convened here on Saturday by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is bound to raise the hackles of the opposition as tackles the controversial Love Jihad narrative treating religious conversions through misrepresentation, allurement, by marriage, force, abetment, threat, undue influence, conspiracy, fraudulent means and other means as crime.

The law once passed by the MP Assembly will attract a punishment of one to five years, or five to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine ranging between Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000. If the offence is committed more than once then the accused could face jail up to 10 years and a fine of Rs 1 lakh as the case may be. The proposed law mandates that the parents of the alleged victim need to lodge an official complaint with the local police before a case can be registered.

The Cabinet approved the “Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Bill, 2020” to be presented in the Legislative Assembly.

Religious freedom has been provided to all citizens of India under Articles 25, 26 ,27 and 28 of the Constitution of India. The purpose of this right is to maintain the spirit of secularism in India. The Freedom of Religion Act was passed in the year 1968 in the state of Madhya Pradesh and its rules were made in the year 1969. Due to insufficient provisions of the said Act in the current scenario, the Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Bill, 2020 has been approved by the Cabinet for introduction in the Assembly.
