Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a key conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, underlining the urgent need for dialogue and diplomatic efforts to calm the rapidly escalating tensions in West Asia.
Leaders Agree on De-escalation
Sharing details of the interaction, Modi said both leaders discussed the worsening situation in the region and agreed that de-escalation through peaceful means is essential. He emphasised that India and France will continue to coordinate closely to promote stability and peace at both regional and global levels.
Macron Flags “Reckless Escalation”
The discussion comes in the backdrop of strong remarks by Macron, who criticised the recent developments as “reckless escalation.” His comments followed missile strikes by Iran targeting energy infrastructure in the Gulf, which have raised alarm across global markets.
Warning Over Energy Impact
Macron warned that any disruption to energy production facilities could have serious long-term consequences for the global economy, especially at a time when markets are already facing uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions.
Call for US-Iran Dialogue
The French President also pushed for direct negotiations between the United States and Iran to defuse the crisis. However, Tehran rejected his appeal, accusing him of ignoring the role of Israel and the US while focusing only on Iran’s actions.
India’s Balanced Approach
India has maintained a cautious and balanced stance on the conflict, consistently calling for dialogue and diplomacy while safeguarding its strategic and economic interests in the region.
As tensions continue to rise in West Asia, the Modi-Macron conversation reflects growing international efforts to prevent further escalation and bring all sides back to the negotiating table.
