In view of the severe weather warnings over Konkan and central Maharashtra region in the coming five days, the Maharashtra government has directed district authorities to remain vigilant and initiate necessary disaster management measures, as required.

A statement from Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s office has informed that district authorities have been asked to ensure that all medical and emergency services continue uninterrupted while special efforts are made to prevent landslides and waterlogging. It added that help can be sought from state or national disaster response forces, Coast Guard and Navy in case evacuations have to be conducted and people living in coastal areas need to be warned regarding rough sea conditions.

Following the severe weather warning, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray today held a meeting with the disaster management authorities of all districts in Mumbai Metropolitan and Konkan regions. All the concerned authorities have been instructed to ensure that there is adequate power backup in case of power cut besides preventing waterlogging in COVID care centres and maintaining continuous supply of oxygen as required. Alert has also been sounded to keep a watch for monsoon diseases like malaria. Mr. Thackeray further insisted that clearing of construction debris, fallen trees and shifting of people from dilapidated buildings to prevent any untoward incident must be prioritised.

Also present in the meeting, Mumbai’s Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said that pumps have been set up at 474 low-lying locations to ensure swift clearance of water-logging adding that a special squad has been created at all police stations which will work with district authorities in clearing fallen trees and managing road traffic. He added that five civic schools have been kept ready in each ward to rehabilitate people from low-lying areas, if necessary.
