Maharashtra: Company suffers huge losses due to bureaucratic negligence

While the dust over alleged corruption to the tune of Rs 2000 Cr in City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO) is far from settling, yet another case of corruption has surfaced. This time it is Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). According to the information, the company has suffered financial losses to the tune of Rs 160 Cr as more than 10 lakh faulty electric meters were supplied which had to be scrapped.

Shiv Sena MLA Sunil Raut from Vikhroli and Sunil Prabhu from Dindoshi raised the issue in the House through starred question on Thursday. Raut said that MSEDCL had procured electric meters from tow companies Ms Rolex Meters Private Limited, Hyderabad and Ms Flash. Out of the total 10 lakh meters procured from Ms Rolex, 8.27 lakh meters had to be scrapped as they showed faulty power usage readings. As a result, the company had to suffer financial losses to the tune of Rs 160 Cr. The irregularity was noticed in January 2020.

Replying to the question, energy minister Dr Nitin Raut admitted that Ms Rolex had supplied faulty meters. “The number of faulty meters is 4.30 lakh and not 8.27 lakh. These were out of 10 lakh meters supplied by Ms Rolex. This has caused financial loses to the tune of Rs 160.80 Cr to the company. While, the 19.2 lakh meters supplied by Ms Flash are found to be perfect,” Dr Raut said. He also informed the House that Ms Rolex Meters Private Limited, Hyderabad has been put in black list on March 21, 2017. A case has been filed against the company at the Bombay High Court for compensation to the losses incurred by MSEDCL.
