Maharashtra CM terms Covid-19 pandemic bizarre, urges industries not to retrench workers

Mumbai: Terming the novel Coronavirus pandemic as bizarre Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said the industrial units should not retrench their workers. “Workers have played a major role in the growth of the industry”, Thackeray said while talking to the representatives of Bharatiya Kamgar Sena through video conferencing.

He suggested that at one point industrial units can resort to salary cut, but should not retrench their workers. “The scenario world over due to coronavirus is bizarre. The government is making every effort to stop the spread of virus. However, it is not clear as to when the life will be back to normal”, he added.

Thackeray said he would personally talk to the management of the industries regarding this issue. He further said Covid-19 cases are rising in Mumbai and Pune. However, since April the state government has allowed functioning of industries in green and orange zones by laying down certain terms and conditions.

“Options should be explored to see whether Covid care committees of management and workers can be formed through which healthy and secured working environment can be established”, Thackeray opined.

People who have served for long should not lose job

It is learnt that some industries and businesses are retrenching their staff, which he said was a “wrong” step. The workers should not lose their job. On one side, some industries are awaiting the return of their workers who have migrated to their home towns after the lockdown was imposed triggered due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic.

On other hand the sons of the soil are in need of the job. In such a situation whosoever is available they should be offered job and the business should be restarted. He cautioned the employers that while doing so, care should be taken that old employees do not lose their job when new ones are recruited.
