At least 10 coronavirus patients were killed after a major fire broke out in the ICU ward of the civil hospital in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar on Saturday, officials said.
Ahmednagar district collector Rajendra Bhosale confirmed that 10 patients died and one patient was critical after the blaze erupted in the ICU section of the civil hospital, where COVID-19 patients were admitted.
Bhosle said that fire audit of Ahmednagar District Hospital was conducted on the background of gas leak incident in Nashik. But still an unfortunate incident has happened. A committee has been set up under the chairmanship of the Chief Fire Officer to look into the matter.
Shankar Misal, chief of the fire department of Ahmedanagar Municipal Corporation said the fire erupted around 11 am.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has expressed his condolences and directed to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter and take stern action against those responsible for the negligence.
Even Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar expressed condolence and said strict action will be taken against those found guilty in the inquiry and all concerned departments will be directed to take necessary preventive measures to prevent recurrence of such accidents.
District Guardian Minister Hasan Mushrif and District Collector are monitoring the situation. The safety and health care of other patients in the hospital has been taken care of, informed Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister expressed grief over the incident and tweeted.
