Nagpur: In a landmark development, the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed the Lokayukt Bill which brings under its ambit the office of the Chief Minister, the Ministers and People’s Representatives.
The Bill which was tabled in the lower house on December 26 earlier this week was passed today without any discussion and in the absence of legislators from the Opposition parties.
The Bill will replace the 1971 Lokayukt Act and has the clause of Prohibition of Corruption Act.
Speaking on the passage of the bill, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that even though there is clause of Prohibition of Corruption Act, certain filters have been set to register a case against the people’s representatives.
With the passage of the bill, Maharashtra has become the first state in the country to pass the Lokayukt Act.
