Rising shuttler Lakshya Sen added yet another feather to his cap by winning his second Super 100 title at the SaarLorLux Open in Saarbrucken, Germany on Sunday. Showing his steely resolve and tenacity, the eighth seed stormed back from a game down to complete a 17-21, 21-18, 21-16 victory in 59 minutes over World No. 102 Weng Hong Yang.
This was the 18-year-old’s title win at a third consecutive tournament, which has enabled him to build an incredible 14-match winning streak. The former Asian junior champion, who had lost the final at the Polish Open earlier in the year, won his first international title of the season at the Belgian International in September. He then followed it up with his first Super 100 success at the Dutch Open in October and then carried that sterling form into the SaarLorLux Open last week.
Sen, currently perched at No. 51 position in the world, had to put in a lot of effort on his way to the title. He was stretched to three games in three of his four matches with his final win over the China Masters champion Yang being a crucial one since he had lost to the Chinese in their two previous meetings this year.
The win will also see the former Youth Olympics silver medallist breaking into the top 50 of the BWF World Rankings for the first time in his career.
Sen’s triumph brings to an end a superb week for Indian badminton which also saw one of India’s best junior stars, Maisnam Meiraba Luwang conquer the Korea Junior Open.
