New Delhi: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri came down heavily on pro-Khalistan demonstrators in Canada, branding them as “kiraye ke tattu” (protesters for hire) and advising the public not to take them seriously.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Puri said, “Yeh jo kiraye ke tattu hain, don’t take them seriously.” The minister was responding to visuals of a car rally organised by Khalistan supporters in parts of Canada ahead of the upcoming G7 Summit.

“These pro-Khalistani supporters are protesting from the neighbouring country (Pakistan), where they receive funding,” Puri alleged. “However, when their funding stopped, they turned on Islamabad itself,” he added.

His sharp remarks come just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the G7 Summit in Alberta, Canada. This marks PM Modi’s sixth consecutive participation in the prestigious Group of Seven gathering, following an invitation extended by Canadian counterpart Mark Carney.
