Mumbai: In a startling cross-border development, comedian and actor Kapil Sharma found himself at the centre of a police investigation after shots were fired at his restaurant, Kap’s Cafe, in Surrey, Canada. Hours after the incident, Mumbai Police reached Kapil’s residence on Friday to question him about the attack and any potential threats received.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 1 a.m. (local time) on July 9, when unidentified assailants fired multiple rounds at the eatery. While no injuries were reported, the attack has triggered alarm over possible international targeting of Indian public figures.
Claiming responsibility for the shooting was Khalistani terrorist Harjeet Singh Laddi, who reportedly accused Kapil Sharma of making objectionable remarks about Nihang Sikhs during his show. According to India Today, Laddi alleged that Sharma had been contacted multiple times and was asked to issue an apology but failed to respond. The shooting, he claimed, was a “warning.”
The Mumbai Police, taking the matter seriously, have begun inquiries to verify the credibility of threats and assess if Sharma had received any prior warnings. Sources say his digital communications and call records may be reviewed to investigate whether any extortion or threat attempts were ignored or went unreported.
While Kapil Sharma has not issued a public statement yet, the management of Kap’s Cafe expressed shock and sorrow on social media, writing: “We opened Kap’s Cafe with hopes of bringing warmth, community, and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversation. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking. We are processing this shock but we are not giving up.”
