Lucknow: The political row over controversial comments on sexual violence intensified on Monday after Samajwadi Party leader ST Hasan launched a sharp attack on Congress MLA Phool Singh Baraiya, while also presenting his own controversial views on the root causes of rape cases in India.
Reacting to Baraiya’s earlier statement, Hasan rejected what he described as a misleading and dangerous narrative around sexual violence. He argued that the growing influence of explicit content on the internet has deeply affected the mindset of young men, leading to a loss of self-control. According to Hasan, constant exposure to online vulgarity fuels aggressive sexual behaviour and distorts attitudes towards women.
He further linked the rise in sexual crimes to substance abuse, particularly alcohol consumption. Hasan claimed that intoxication erodes moral judgment and social boundaries, resulting in horrific crimes, even within families. His remarks drew immediate attention due to their blunt and graphic nature, sparking debate across political and social circles.
Taking an extreme stand on punishment, the Samajwadi Party leader demanded the toughest possible action against those convicted of rape. He said existing laws fail to create fear among criminals and called for exemplary punishment to act as a deterrent, reflecting growing public anger over sexual crimes.
As criticism mounted, Congress MLA Phool Singh Baraiya issued a clarification distancing himself from the statement attributed to him. In a video message shared on social media, Baraiya said the remark was not his personal belief but a philosophical quotation referenced during a discussion. He stressed that he neither supports nor agrees with the quoted idea and accused opponents of misrepresenting his words.
The controversy also prompted a response from Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who strongly condemned any remarks that appear to justify or trivialise crimes against women. Emphasising cultural values and social responsibility, Chouhan said women must be respected across all castes, religions and communities.
He underlined that daughters should never be viewed through political or social divisions and warned leaders against making irresponsible statements on sensitive issues. According to him, such remarks only deepen social fault lines and distract from the real need—ensuring safety, dignity and justice for women.
