The Indian High Commission has issued a stern condemnation following a distressing incident that transpired on Saturday in Glasgow, Scotland, where Vikram Doraiswami, the High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, was denied entry into a gurdwara by a group of Khalistani radicals.
A video capturing the incident has circulated widely on the internet, revealing a gathering of Khalistan supporters surrounding the vehicle of the Indian diplomat. In the video, they can be seen obstructing his entry to the gurdwara, ultimately forcing his departure from the scene.
This incident comes on the heels of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent statement in the Canadian Parliament, wherein he alleged the involvement of the Indian government in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated Khalistani terrorist. These allegations, categorically rejected by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India as “absurd and motivated,” have stirred international controversy.
Labeling the incident as “disgraceful,” the Indian High Commission in London swiftly reported the matter to both the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom.
The High Commission provided an account of the incident, stating, “On September 29, 2023, three individuals, all hailing from regions outside of Scotland, intentionally disrupted a planned interaction organized by the Gurudwara Committee for the community, the High Commissioner, and the Consul General of India. The organizers of the event included senior community leaders, women, and committee members, along with a member of the Scottish Parliament. They were subjected to threats and verbal abuse by these individuals.”
“In an effort to prevent any potential altercation, the High Commissioner and the Consul General decided to vacate the premises shortly after their arrival,” the High Commission added in its statement.
This incident underscores the urgent need for dialogue, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence in addressing complex issues and concerns. The Indian government remains committed to constructive engagement and diplomacy as it navigates these challenging matters on the international stage.
