Transport department wants to wait to work on protocols and they start learner’s tests as the same machine is used by all.
Mumbai: The people of Mumbai will have to wait for some more time for their driving license says the transport department. The state ministry of Transport has started working on protocols to be followed in their Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) while taking learner’s driving tests. After the issuance of learning license, the individual is eligible to get permanent driving license.
The Maharashtra government has issued guidelines on restrictions and relaxation based on the containment zones. The government has announced phase wise reopening of economy under the name ‘mission begging again ‘ however lockdown in the containment zones will continue till June 30. The transport department will resume its operations from June 8, but as of now has continued with its policy of no learning license tests in RTOs.
The Maharashtra transport department has issued a notice to suspend driving license and fitness renewal tests in view of the novel coronavirus outbreak from March. The learner’s license tests were stopped at all the RTOs across the state although RTOs had maintained 5% of staff for daily operations.
Transport Commissioner Shekhar Channe said, “We are still continuing to suspend driving license and fitness tests. In fact, we will not give any new driving license as we are still working on Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs). We will also have to plan for learner’s license tests as the same equipment is used by all.”
Anil Parab Transport Minister said, “We are working on the methods to be followed in RTOs. In resumption of work, the Standard Operation Procedures should be strictly followed as laid by government. That is why we are still holding on the issuance of new learning license.”
