Here’s the List: Countries Facing New U.S Tariffs as Trump Signs Major Trade Order; India Hit with 25% Duty

Mumbai: In a sweeping and controversial move, U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing reciprocal tariffs on imports from over 70 countries, triggering global economic concerns and reigniting trade tensions. The tariffs range from 10% to 41%, with India among the countries facing a 25% levy on goods exported to the United States.

The executive order, signed Thursday, aims to correct what Trump called “long-standing trade imbalances” that have, according to him, put American industries and workers at a disadvantage. Trump stated, “For decades, our trading partners have taken advantage of America’s generosity. That ends today.”

According to a statement from the White House, the move is intended to close the trade deficit and protect key U.S. sectors, particularly manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and energy. The administration has justified the tariff on Canada, which has been raised from 25% to 35%, by citing what it called Ottawa’s “failure to combat the illicit drug crisis” and its “hostile retaliation against U.S. countermeasures.”

India, along with nations like Kazakhstan, Tunisia, Brunei, and Moldova, will now face a 25% import duty, potentially impacting a wide range of Indian exports, including textiles, pharmaceuticals, and auto parts. Indian trade analysts have warned that this decision could create friction between New Delhi and Washington, especially as India prepares for critical international trade negotiations later this year.

The White House also clarified that certain nations, such as Brazil, may face additional layered tariffs beyond the base rate, depending on the sector and product involved.

Here is the updated list of countries and their corresponding U.S. tariff rates under the new executive order:

  • 41% Tariff: Syria
  • 40% Tariff: Laos, Myanmar (Burma)
  • 39% Tariff: Switzerland
  • 35% Tariff: Iraq, Serbia, Canada

  • 18% Tariff: Nicaragua
  • 15% Tariff: Israel, Japan, Turkey, Nigeria, Ghana, and others
  • 10% Tariff: Brazil, United Kingdom, Falkland Islands
