In a notable divergence from Gujarat’s stringent alcohol prohibition, the state government has sanctioned the consumption of liquor in specific zones within the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT). The permission, outlined in a recent notification, allows consumption exclusively in hotels, restaurants, and clubs offering “Wine and Dine” services within the GIFT premises.
The authorization extends to all employees and proprietors working within GIFT City, granting them access to consume liquor in establishments holding an FL3 license for the designated “Wine and Dine” facilities. Additionally, authorized visitors of these companies are permitted to partake in alcohol consumption under the condition of being in the presence of permanent employees and obtaining temporary permits.
Crucially, these venues are permitted to offer liquor for consumption but are barred from selling liquor bottles, as stipulated by the government directive. Oversight and regulation of the import, storage, and service of liquor within GIFT City will be managed by the Narcotics and Excise Department, ensuring compliance with established norms.
GIFT City, situated along the picturesque Sabarmati river, stands as a burgeoning business district strategically positioned between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Recognized as a nucleus for cross-border financial services, it attracts domestic and international financial institutions, offering state-of-the-art infrastructure and a conducive business environment.
The spectrum of operations within GIFT City spans offshore banking, asset management, insurance, and caters to companies engaged in capital markets, IT services, and business process outsourcing. The locale also hosts government-approved International Financial Service Centres (IFSCs) operating under regulated frameworks.
The decision to permit limited liquor consumption in designated areas of GIFT City marks a departure from Gujarat’s historic prohibition on alcohol, a policy in place since its inception as a state separate from Maharashtra. Notably, the state has, on specific occasions, relaxed these regulations, notably during global events such as the Vibrant Gujarat Summit.
The move within GIFT City underscores an evolving approach, aligning with the demands and preferences of a burgeoning business ecosystem, fostering a conducive environment for diverse professionals while maintaining regulatory control over liquor access and consumption within the designated zones.
