Fadnavis Welcomes Supreme Court Stay on Acquittal of Accused in 2006 Mumbai Train Blasts Case

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday expressed satisfaction over the Supreme Court’s decision to stay the Bombay High Court verdict that had acquitted all 12 accused in the 2006 Mumbai train bomb blasts case. The horrific blasts, which took place on July 11, 2006, claimed 189 lives and left over 800 injured in one of the worst terror attacks in the city’s history.

Reacting to the Supreme Court’s interim order, Fadnavis said, “We are satisfied that the Supreme Court has stayed this… High Court had acquitted them and that is why Maharashtra Government had approached the Supreme Court. Today, Supreme Court has stayed the order. I think this is the right step.”

The High Court had recently overturned the 2015 convictions made by a special MCOCA court, stating that the prosecution had failed to conclusively establish the guilt of the accused. Following this, all 12 were acquitted and released. Of these, five had earlier been given the death penalty, and seven were sentenced to life imprisonment.

The state government promptly filed an appeal in the Supreme Court, seeking a review of the acquittal. The apex court, while admitting the plea, stayed the High Court’s verdict and issued notices to the acquitted individuals, seeking their responses. However, it clarified that the stay will not result in their re-arrest for the time being.

Fadnavis reiterated the state’s commitment to justice for the victims and their families, many of whom have waited nearly two decades for closure. He also noted that the government believes the investigation carried out by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the convictions by the special court were based on strong evidence, and that justice will ultimately prevail through the judicial process.

Your idea is outstanding; the issue is something that not enough people are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this.
