On Sunday, BJP MLA Rahul Narvekar was elected as the Maharashtra Assembly Speaker, garnering 164 votes.
He defeated the Shiv Sena Thackeray faction candidate Rajan Salvi by a comfortable margin. Salvi managed to garner 107 votes.
Voting for the post of speaker was conducted via head counting.
The post of Assembly Speaker was lying vacant since Nana Patole of Congress resigned in February 2021 to become his party’s state unit president. Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal was officiating as acting Speaker in the meantime.
