“Citizens Must Stop Travelling, But Modi Ji Is Going Abroad Again?”: DMK Attacks PM Over Foreign Tour Amid Austerity Appeal

The political war over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal for public austerity intensified on Monday after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) questioned the timing of his upcoming foreign visit and accused the BJP government of asking citizens to make sacrifices while continuing its own high-profile international engagements.

The sharp attack came a day after the Prime Minister urged people to conserve fuel, reduce unnecessary expenses, avoid foreign travel and adopt work-from-home practices to help India deal with global economic pressures arising from the ongoing Iran-US conflict and rising crude oil prices.

DMK Questions Government’s Own Actions

Launching a direct attack on the Prime Minister, DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai mocked the government’s appeal and asked what sacrifices the ruling establishment itself was prepared to make.

In a strongly worded social media post, the DMK leader criticised the Centre for advising citizens to avoid overseas travel and cut consumption while the Prime Minister himself was scheduled for an extended international tour later this month.

Annadurai remarked that asking ordinary people to reduce expenses while political leaders continue official tours exposed what he described as a contradiction between public messaging and government action.

PM Modi’s Upcoming Foreign Visit Triggers Debate

According to political discussions surrounding the issue, Prime Minister Modi is expected to undertake a multi-country foreign visit beginning later this month, with stops reportedly including the UAE and European nations.

The opposition has now turned the visit into a political issue, arguing that citizens are being asked to tighten spending while the government continues large-scale diplomatic and political engagements.

The BJP, however, has defended the Prime Minister’s appeal as a precautionary national effort aimed at preparing the country for possible economic disruptions caused by international instability.

Rahul Gandhi Also Intensifies Attack

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had earlier launched a similar attack on the Prime Minister, claiming the government was transferring the burden of economic management onto ordinary citizens.

He criticised the appeal asking people to reduce fuel usage, avoid foreign travel and limit purchases, arguing that such public messaging reflected policy failures after years of governance.

Gandhi further alleged that the administration repeatedly asks citizens to bear the impact of inflation and economic uncertainty instead of taking direct accountability.

Political Battle Over Economic Messaging Deepens

The controversy has now evolved into a broader political battle over the government’s handling of inflation, fuel prices and global economic risks linked to tensions in West Asia.

While the ruling alliance says public cooperation is essential during periods of international crisis, opposition parties argue that citizens should not be made to shoulder the consequences of global instability and policy shortcomings.

The issue is expected to remain politically charged as crude oil prices continue fluctuating amid uncertainty surrounding the Iran-US conflict.
