‘Satluj’ to Be Screened at Gurudwaras Across Five States After OTT Removal

Diljit Dosanjh’s Satluj, a biographical drama inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, will now be screened at gurudwaras across five states after it was taken down from its OTT platform shortly after its India release. The community-led initiative aims to ensure that audiences continue to have access to the film despite its removal from digital streaming.

Community Screenings Planned Across Five States

Sikh religious organisations and gurudwara committees have announced special screenings of Satluj in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and Jammu. The campaign is being coordinated through local gurudwara management bodies, which have decided to host public screenings for members of the community.

According to reports, screening schedules have already been announced in several locations, with additional venues expected to join the initiative in the coming days.

Move Comes After Film’s OTT Takedown

The screenings follow the film’s removal from the streaming platform just 48 hours after its release in India. Reports indicate that the movie was withdrawn following directions issued under the Information Technology Rules, with security-related concerns cited as the reason behind the decision.

The development drew attention from Sikh organisations and several political leaders, who questioned the removal and urged that the film be made available again.

Film Faced Years of Release Delays

Satluj, previously titled Punjab ’95, experienced a prolonged release journey before finally reaching audiences. The film underwent an extended certification process, during which multiple edits and title changes were reportedly suggested before clearance.

The filmmakers are understood to have challenged several of the proposed changes, resulting in delays that stretched over several years before the film eventually premiered.

Story Based on Jaswant Singh Khalra

Directed by Honey Trehan, the film is inspired by the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist known for documenting alleged human rights violations in Punjab during the 1990s.

The film features Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role, alongside Arjun Rampal, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan.

Community Backs Public Access

Community leaders supporting the initiative have said the screenings are intended to ensure that the film remains accessible to viewers after its removal from OTT platforms. The campaign has also received support from Sikh organisations in Delhi and other states, with more screenings expected to be organised in the coming weeks.
