ALIFA Slams Delhi Police Inaction, Demands Arrest of Bajrang Dal Members in Attack on Queer Domestic Violence Survivor

New Delhi: Marking one month of alleged inaction by the Delhi Police, the All India Feminist Alliance (ALIFA), affiliated with the National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM), has strongly condemned what it described as “patriarchal and right-wing violence” against a queer domestic violence survivor and members of a Delhi-based feminist organisation.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, ALIFA expressed solidarity with the survivor and the queer feminist collective Nazariya, accusing self-styled members of Bajrang Dal and Durga Vahini of orchestrating a violent mob attack outside a police station in February.

According to ALIFA, the survivor had voluntarily left her marital home—where she allegedly faced forced sex, physical and mental abuse—and sought refuge with Nazariya. She had also informed the concerned police stations of her decision, making it the legal responsibility of authorities to ensure her protection.

However, ALIFA alleged that members of Bajrang Dal attempted to forcibly return the survivor to her family, mobilising a mob at the police station. The group reportedly attacked activists, lawyers, and even threatened journalists present at the scene.

Calling the incident “unconstitutional vigilantism,” ALIFA stated that such actions reinforce regressive notions that women must remain in abusive marriages. The organisation described the violence as “misogynist and homophobic,” targeting not only the survivor but also those supporting her.

The statement also raised serious concerns over police conduct, alleging that officers failed to intervene during the attack and instead acted under pressure from the mob. The police were accused of attempting to coerce the survivor into meeting her alleged abusers and isolating her from her legal and support network.

“This represents a grave violation of the survivor’s rights and a failure of the state to uphold constitutional protections,” ALIFA said.

Highlighting the lack of safe shelters for women and queer individuals escaping domestic violence, the alliance underscored the importance of organisations like Nazariya, which provide critical support systems.

ALIFA further warned that such incidents reflect a broader pattern where state mechanisms are increasingly influenced by right-wing pressures, undermining individual autonomy and constitutional rights.

Demanding immediate action, the alliance called for:

  • Urgent investigation into the incident
  • Immediate arrest of those involved under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)
  • Legal action against police personnel for alleged dereliction of duty

“We urge law enforcement agencies and the judiciary to act impartially and uphold constitutional values in both letter and spirit,” the statement added.
