To combat the looming air pollution crisis this winter, the Delhi government has launched a comprehensive 21-point Winter Action Plan. Environment Minister Gopal Rai unveiled the initiative on Wednesday, which includes key measures such as work from home (WFH), the possible reintroduction of the odd-even vehicle scheme, and even artificial rain to improve air quality.
“This year, our theme is ‘Mil Kar Chale, Pradushan Se Lade’ (Let’s Fight Pollution Together),” stated Rai, emphasizing that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government will begin executing the plan immediately to address air pollution in the national capital.
Real-Time Drone Monitoring and Anti-Pollution Measures
One of the standout features of the action plan is the use of drones to monitor high-pollution areas in real time. “Drones will be deployed to identify the root causes of pollution in hotspots,” Rai explained. These drones will help pinpoint areas suffering from poor air quality, allowing for quicker deployment of anti-smog guns, whose frequency will be increased this year.
The plan also includes other efforts such as an anti-dust campaign and the use of road-sweeping machines across the city. Additionally, the government will continue its ban on firecrackers, ensuring full enforcement once a notification is issued.
Emergency Measures: WFH, Odd-Even Scheme, and Artificial Rain
To tackle potential pollution surges, the Delhi government has put in place emergency protocols, including encouraging work-from-home for offices and the voluntary reduction of private vehicle usage. Rai mentioned the potential reimplementation of the odd-even vehicle scheme during peak pollution periods to further reduce vehicular emissions.
Additionally, the government is planning to deploy artificial rain to improve the Air Quality Index (AQI) of the city, particularly from November 1-15. This timeframe aligns with the Diwali festivities and the peak stubble-burning season, both of which traditionally lead to severe spikes in air pollution.
GRAP and Other Initiatives
Rai also noted that the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) will be activated, with 588 teams already formed to prevent the open burning of garbage. GRAP is designed to take pollution control measures based on the severity of air quality in the city.
“We are fully prepared for winter, but it requires collective effort from citizens and the government alike. We urge everyone to cooperate and contribute to reducing pollution,” Rai concluded.
This year’s Winter Action Plan reflects the Delhi government’s focus on using technology and enforcing strict measures to protect public health, especially during the high-pollution months ahead.
