Swami Prasad Maurya, a prominent leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP) known for his outspoken views on Hinduism, has once again ignited controversy with a provocative statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. In his post, Maurya questioned the traditional depiction of Goddess Lakshmi with four hands, sparking mixed reactions from the public.

A member of the Uttar Pradesh legislative council, Maurya contended that there is a commonality among people born across religions, castes, races, colors, and countries, as everyone shares the same physical attributes. He questioned the representation of Goddess Lakshmi with four hands, stating that no child with four hands, eight hands, 10 hands, or more has ever been born. Instead, Maurya urged people to worship and honor their wives on Deepotsav, asserting that they are the true goddesses responsible for nurturing, happiness, prosperity, food, and family care.

The statement prompted diverse reactions, with some expressing support for Maurya’s perspective, while others criticized him for questioning a Hindu deity. One user argued for prioritizing the worship of mothers before wives, while another backed Maurya, emphasizing the significance of respecting and worshiping the living.

Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam responded to Maurya’s remark on Goddess Lakshmi, urging Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ban the SP leader from speaking. “Swami Prasad Maurya has got piles in his mouth. He needs treatment. I will ask Yogi Adityanath to put a ban on Maurya speaking,” Krishnam told ANI.

This is not the first time Maurya has made controversial statements. His remarks on Lord Ram and Ramcharitmanas in the past have sparked widespread criticism and debate. In August, he labeled Hinduism as “deceitful” and “a hoax,” drawing condemnation from various quarters. Maurya’s latest statement adds to the ongoing discussions surrounding religious sentiments and freedom of expression in the political landscape.
