New Delhi: The Chinese diplomatic mission in Kathmandu has denied the claims made by local media, on Beijing devising strategies to prevent Washington from making inroads in Nepal. Beijing eyeing to coil Kathmandu in its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was alleged to have counseling Nepalese leadership to reject US investments in the form of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).
According to reports, Chinese Ambassador Hou Yanqi, who has been a target for international media for her undiplomatic operations, has defended her government which has been portrayed as the ‘bone of contention’ hindering the US attempts to deepen ties with Nepal.
Local media reported that Ambassador Yanqi in her interview with a Kathmandu-based news agency said that the MCC grant ‘was entirely a matter between Nepal and the United States’. She was reported saying that China does not see the MCC on lines or the BRI neither can it can be compared with Chinese grants and projects.
She expressed confidence over the Nepalese leadership’s decision-making skills to choose ‘what’s right for their national interest’.
Taking a hit on India-Nepal conflict on the border region of Kalapani, Yanqi said that the ‘disputed territory’ of Kalapani was an issue between Nepal and India. She encouraged both nations to ‘correctly resolve the dispute through friendly discussion’.
Yanqi’s statements on the US-led initiative of the MCC and the Indian territory of Kalapani came 48 hours after an official statement was released by the Nepalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The statement read ‘Nepal is in favor of concluding treaties or agreements on mutual legal assistance and extradition, as may be necessary, with the neighboring and other friendly countries with a view to promoting effective cooperation on crime prevention and control. We are doing necessary internal homework to this end.’
