“Carrying Capacity is Low”: CM Fadnavis Addresses Mumbra Train Tragedy, Promises New Train Designs

Mumbai: Following the tragic deaths of four people near Mumbra railway station due to overcrowding, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has acknowledged the limitations of Mumbai’s local train system during peak hours. He stated, “In the last 11 years, PM Modi’s government has invested a large amount in Mumbai’s suburban region in passenger amenities… However, it is true that during the peak hours, our carrying capacity is low. So, we need to strengthen that. We will work on this.”

Fadnavis also highlighted the Railway Minister’s concern about doorless trains and the increased risk of accidents. He announced plans to introduce doors and improve ventilation in new train designs. According to reports, new non-AC trains will feature louvred doors, roof-mounted ventilation units, and vestibules to allow passenger movement between coaches. The first train with this new design is expected to be ready by November 2025 and in service by January 2026.
