BMCs Eco friendly move includes plans to replace its vehicles with Electric vehicles

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to focus on introducing environment friendly as well as pollution free electric vehicles phase wise in its fleet of vehicles. In the first phase 10 percent of E-vehicles will be introduced by the BMC. Of these, 83 E-vehicles will be inducted in the BMC convoy by the end of March. Apart from this, 85 charging stations will also be set up in the city.

The Central and State Government have instructed various agencies to use pollution free vehicles in their fleet. Tourism and Environment Minister, Aaditya Thackeray is also striving hard about using more environmentally friendly vehicles. Working on the same line, the corporation has decided to purchase 10 percent state-of-the-art environmentally friendly vehicles in its fleet.

In the first phase, 83 vehicles will be procured and a tender process will be launched soon. An allocation of Rs 35 crore will be spent on this. For this, quotations have been invited from E-vehicle manufacturing companies and it will be studied.

Amongst the transport fleet for corporators, officials etc of the BMC, now 10 per cent of the vehicle will include E-vehicles. Apart from this, E-vehicles will also be procured to replace old, defective or replaceable vehicles. In addition, the vehicles that will be purchased in future will be E-vehicles only.

The corporation will also focus on setting up charging stations for the E-vehicles as it focuses on environmentally friendly modes of transportation. Charging stations will be set up at 85 places in the city. Along with the corporation vehicles, private vehicles will also be able to use these charging stations.

In the first phase, 32 Dry waste vehicles 12, E buses, 27 vehicles for private use and 12 E cleaning machine vehicles will be brought.

“The corporation is going to increase the use of E-vehicles in phases for its anti-pollution measures. Defective vehicles will be replaced by E-vehicles. The BMC will continue to buy e-vehicles in the future,” Suresh Kakani, Additional Municipal Commissioner, BMC.
