BJP Wins Falta As TMC Stronghold Crumbles, Jahangir Khan Slips To Fourth Place

The Bharatiya Janata Party tightened its grip on West Bengal politics after registering a decisive victory in the Falta repoll, a constituency long viewed as a political bastion of the All India Trinamool Congress in South 24 Parganas district.

With the latest win, the BJP’s tally in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly climbed to 208 seats, further strengthening its dominance after the recently concluded state elections.

BJP candidate Debangshu Panda secured a massive victory margin after polling nearly 1.5 lakh votes, comfortably defeating rivals from the CPI(M), Congress and TMC.

TMC Suffers Embarrassing Collapse In Traditional Pocket

The biggest political shock emerged from the performance of TMC-backed leader Jahangir Khan, who finished in fourth position despite Falta being considered politically influential for Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee.

Political observers described the result as a symbolic collapse of the so-called “Diamond Harbour model” often promoted by the TMC leadership in South Bengal.

The seat had largely remained under TMC influence since 2001, except for a brief CPI(M) victory in 2006. BJP’s latest breakthrough marks the party’s first-ever victory from the constituency.

The result also came despite Khan announcing his withdrawal from the contest shortly before polling, adding further confusion to the electoral battle.

BJP Looks To Expand Momentum Ahead Of Nandigram Bypoll

Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari used the Falta outcome to energise supporters ahead of the upcoming Nandigram by-election.

Addressing public meetings, Adhikari urged voters to replicate the “Falta model” in Nandigram, where a fresh bypoll became necessary after he retained the Bhabanipur constituency.

The BJP leader also intensified attacks on the TMC leadership, alleging that public dissatisfaction was growing across multiple regions of Bengal.

Voters Celebrate Shift In Political Mood

Scenes of celebration erupted across parts of Falta after the results, with BJP supporters claiming the election reflected a change in grassroots political sentiment.

Several local residents alleged that voters felt more confident participating freely in the repoll compared to previous elections.

Meanwhile, TMC leadership remained under pressure on multiple fronts, including civic notices and growing opposition mobilisation in different districts.

In north Bengal, BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh continued public outreach programmes, signalling the party’s attempt to maintain momentum beyond the election results.
