Bhagwant Mann Accuses Past Governments of Aiding Drug Trade: Vows to Seal Borders and Jail the Powerful

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched a scathing attack on previous state governments, accusing them of enabling and shielding the drug trade in Punjab. During the concluding session of the special assembly debate titled ‘Yudh Nasheyan Virudh’ (War Against Drugs), Mann declared his government’s unwavering commitment to dismantling narcotic networks and delivering justice to the people of Punjab.

Addressing the House, Mann said, “The current government has significantly disrupted drug supply networks and taken concrete action against those involved, including politically influential figures.” He emphasized that the fight against drugs is being fought at both the grassroots and top political levels, without fear or favour.

Mann revealed that steps are being taken to seal Punjab’s borders to curb the inflow of narcotics and to redirect the youth of the state towards employment and better economic prospects. He reiterated his government’s approach of using strict enforcement alongside rehabilitation and opportunity.

Accusing previous administrations of complicity, the Chief Minister said, “Earlier regimes not only turned a blind eye to the drug crisis but also actively protected and facilitated drug networks across the state.”

In a shocking revelation, he alleged, “Government machinery, including official vehicles, was misused to transport narcotics under the patronage of powerful individuals.”

Highlighting the shift under his leadership, Mann stated that many high-profile figures who were once considered untouchable are now behind bars. “We have broken this pattern by arresting several individuals who were previously considered beyond the reach of law. Many of these individuals, known for amassing wealth through illicit activities, are now in jail and facing the consequences of their actions,” he asserted.

Mann also criticized political adversaries for defending those implicated in drug-related crimes. Without naming any individuals, he said, “There are political opponents who opposed the arrest of senior leaders linked to the drug trade. History remembers such betrayals against Punjab’s interests.”
