Dr C S Murthy

Dr. C. S. Murthy is a leading expert in geospatial technology applications in agriculture with over 34 years of experience in crop forecasting, agricultural risk assessment, drought monitoring, remote sensing, and data-driven agricultural governance. He served as Director of the Mahalanobis National Crop Forecast Centre (MNCFC), Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India, and earlier as Group Director, Agricultural Sciences & Applications, at the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO, Hyderabad. A PhD in Agricultural Sciences, Dr. Murthy played a key role in the development of several landmark national initiatives, including the National Crop Yield Forecasting System, YES-TECH under PMFBY, MahaAgriTech, Smart Sampling Technique for crop insurance, and India’s pioneering parametric crop insurance model in West Bengal. His work has significantly influenced India’s crop estimation systems, satellite-based agricultural monitoring, and technology-led policy frameworks. Following his superannuation in June 2024, Dr. Murthy mentors AgriTech startups, advises institutions, and writes on agricultural technology, crop statistics, climate risk, and digital transformation in the farm sector.
