A shocking runway collision at LaGuardia Airport has triggered chaos after an Air Canada passenger jet struck a ground vehicle, leaving multiple people injured and forcing a complete shutdown of airport operations.
The incident involved Air Canada Flight 8646, which had arrived from Montreal and was taxiing on the runway when it collided with a vehicle, reportedly a fire truck. The aircraft was moving at around 30 mph when the impact occurred, causing visible damage and immediate panic.
What Exactly Happened on the Runway?
According to initial reports, the aircraft had just landed and was nearing the end of its runway movement when it hit the vehicle. Within seconds, air traffic controllers began issuing urgent warnings, trying to stop the ground vehicle and prevent disaster.
Audio recordings captured the tense moments, with controllers repeatedly shouting, “Stop, stop, stop!” as the situation quickly spiralled out of control. Other aircraft were immediately instructed to abort landing attempts and stay clear of the runway.
What Does the ATC Audio Reveal?
The audio reveals how rapidly the situation escalated. What began as a routine instruction to a ground unit soon turned into emergency commands. Controllers warned the truck multiple times, but moments later, the collision occurred.
Following the crash, instructions were issued to nearby aircraft to “go around,” while others were told to hold position after the controller confirmed the collision. The communication highlights the urgency and confusion in the final seconds before impact.
Emergency Shutdown and Rescue Response
Within moments of the crash, authorities shut down runway operations. Messages confirming “Runway closed” were followed by a complete airport shutdown as emergency services rushed to the scene.
The Federal Aviation Administration imposed a ground stop, halting all incoming and outgoing flights. Several flights were diverted as a safety precaution.
Emergency teams, including the New York Fire Department, reached the site quickly and began rescue operations.
Injuries Reported, Investigation Begins
At least four people have been reported injured, including members of the flight crew and ground personnel. Some sustained serious injuries, though no confirmed fatalities have been reported so far.
The aircraft involved is operated by Jazz Aviation, a regional partner of Air Canada. Visuals circulating online show damage to the aircraft’s front section, though officials are yet to confirm these images.
Authorities are now expected to launch a detailed investigation into how a ground vehicle entered the aircraft’s path, with the ATC audio likely to play a key role in determining responsibility.
The incident has raised serious concerns about runway safety at one of the busiest airports in the United States.
