Revenge politics in full swing on Capitol Hill, as Republicans now vow to impeach Biden

As the GOP and Democrats slug it out in the mud-pit with impeachment punches thrown at each other, China takes sarcastic pot-shots at the US

Mumbai: The revenge politics between the Democrats and the Republicans is in full swing on Capitol Hill even as it gets ready to inaugurate Democrat Joseph Robinette Biden @ Joe Biden as its 46th President on January 20. With barely days to go before US President Donald Trump steps down from office, the Democrat controlled House of Representatives voted 232 to 197 in favor of a historic second impeachment of Trump. The Chinese who till recently kept quiet has taken a sarcastic swipe at the deployment of US National Guard troops at the Capitol Hill ahead of the inauguration day.

Hu Xinjin (@HuXinjin_GT) Editor-in-Chief of Chinese state affiliated Global Times put out a sarcastic tweet with pictures of US army soldiers sleeping in the corridors of Capitol Hill as US Senators try to make their way. “Why so many troops show up in DC as Washington is welcoming the new President? Is the US government in deep fear of its people?” quizzed Hu Xinjin.

It is not just Trump’s presidency that is going to be marked by the historic second impeachment that seeks to cancel out his 2024 bid, Joe Biden’s presidency is also going to be marred by the fact that it began with a bitter acrimony that has further divided America.

A Freshman Congresswoman from Georgia, Marjorie Taylor Greene has announced on Twitter that she will be filing articles for impeachment on January 21, a full day for Joe Biden into his presidency. In her series of tweets she said that she will attempt to impeach President elect Joe Biden for abuse of power once he is sworn into office.

She further tweeted “I would like to announce on behalf of the American people we have to make sure that our leaders are held accountable”. Greene claimed that Biden is “willing to abuse the power of the office of the presidency and be easily bought off by foreign governments, Chinese energy companies, and Ukrainian energy companies”.

However, for Greene and the Grand Old Party (GOP), the Republicans too face embarrassment as an open rift emerges within the party. Fellow Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace from South Carolina has hit out at Greene for being a conspiracy theorist. At least 10 Republican Senators broke ranks and joined the Democrats in voting in favor of impeachment of Trump.

What has shocked many is House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney from Wyoming and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell voting in favor of the impeachment. Mitch McConnell went on to add that the impeachment trial will not be held until after Biden is sworn into office.

Trump was first impeached by the Congress in December 2019 on two Ukraine related charges, but was acquitted by the GOP led Senate.

Marjorie Taylor Greene is basing her impeachment articles on the probe report of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs (HSAC) and Senate Committee on Finance during the Barack Obama presidency from 2009 to 2017. Biden was then the 47th vice president of America.

The Senate committee report had probed whether the Obama Ukraine policy could have been affected by Hunter Biden’s (Joe Biden’s son) position on the board of Burisma, the Ukrainian natural gas company, and that the family members (of Joe Biden) may have improperly sought to benefit from their relationship with the Vice President.

The report titled “Hunter Biden, Burisma and Corruption: The Impact on US Government policy and Related Concerns” was released by the Senate on December 9, 2020. In its findings the report had concluded that “former Vice President Joe Biden allowed Hunter Biden and other members of his family to enrich themselves through links with foreign companies and governments while he was in office.
