Mumbai: Gone are the days when not many candidates were in the fray for elections to the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC). One can hardly believe one’s eyes as there are 170 candidates left in the fray to the five Legislative Council seats from Teachers and Graduates constituencies. All this despite the fact that 49 candidates withdrew from the poll fray leaving everybody perplexed.

Pune Graduates constituency appears to be the hotly contested seat with as many as 62 candidates remaining in the poll fray. The ballot papers in Pune, Aurangabad and Amravati constituencies will look like broadsheet newspapers!

In the Pune Graduates seat there are a whopping 62 candidates in the fray with prominent candidates being BJP’s Sangram Deshmukh and NCP’s Arun Lad. Whereas in the Pune Teachers’ constituency there are 35 candidates in the poll fray that includes main contenders Congress’ Jayant Asgaonkar and BJP’s Jitendra Pawar.

As for Aurangabad Graduates constituency there are 35 contenders in the poll fray. However the main contest will be between BJP’s Shirish Boralkar and NCP’s Satish Chavan will battle it out.

In the Amravati Teachers’ constituency there are 29 candidates are in the fray while the main battle will be between BJP’s Dr Nitin Dhande and Shiv Sena’s Srikant Deshpande.

In the Nagpur Graduates constituency, BJP’s Sandeep Joshi, Congress’ Abhijeet Vanjari are in the fray along with seven others.

Elections to these seats were due since July but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has said that polls will now be held on 1st of December while counting will be done on December 3 while ensuring proper COVID-19 protocol in this regard.
