The Supreme Court today modified the Telangana High Court directions and gave interim orders allowing firing of green crackers for two hours in the state. The two judge bench comprising of Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and Sanjiv Khanna was hearing a plea by the Telangana Fire Workers Dealers Association, which had challenged the high court order on grounds that the decision will impact their livelihoods. The petitioner contended that selling of firecrackers is a seasonal business for which heavy investments have been made.
The Apex court direction is in accordance with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order of 9th of this month in which the NGT had permitted bursting of green crackers in cities where air quality is moderate. Following the Telangana high court’s directions, the Telangana state government had issued a Government Order imposing a ban on sale and use of firecrackers with immediate effect.
AIR Correspondent reports, in the wake of anticipation of second wave COVID, Deepavali crackers issue gained importance in Telangana. An advocate moved the state High Court seeking ban on firing crackers during Deepavali festivities keeping in view the inconvenience to be posed to COVID patients and others who are recovering and also have respiratory problems. On the directions given by the High Court, the Telangana state government has immediately issued orders banning firing and selling crackers. The move raised concerns among different sections, including Fire Workers Dealers besides those who support traditional way of celebrations. However, the Supreme Court’s interim directions resolved the issues of all major sections as it allows firing crackers and also prohibit them in the areas where pollution levels are high.
