Talks between Afghanistan, Taliban stalled over ‘two fundamental’ issues

New Delhi: A haste-driven Taliban which eyes its dominance in Afghan lands after the reparation of the US and NATO forces, rushed to press its demand at the negotiation table leading to a stalemate in the peace talks. The block in the intra-Afghan peace talks surfaced as the Taliban straddled the fence about the ceasefire by floating inconsequential controversial issues.

According to a spokesman for the Afghanistan Government’s negotiating the radical Taliban brought forth two ‘fundamental issues’ to be discussed ahead of time, leading to a dispute. As per the official, these issues are subjects of value and structure.

“What is important is that we are still looking for common ground on two fundamental issues that have been brought to the table ahead of time,” Nader Naderi, a member, and spokesman for the Afghan delegation told international media while insisting that efforts are underway to resolve the differences in the negotiations. Naderi explained that the issues raised are issues of value and structure that are important for the Ashraf Ghani-led government and the people of Afghanistan. However, he refused to elaborate on the matter, directing that instead of raising these two issues, other issues should have been discussed first, including the cessation of hostilities and the cease-fire.

According to reports, the Taliban delegation discussed the basis of Hanafi jurisprudence and the peace agreement document that the group had previously signed with Washington in the talks. This was met with a response from the Afghan delegation. This dispute has led to a halt to negotiations and caused the procedure not to be finalized.

Speaking on the ‘half-hearted’ pace of the peace talks, Naderi said “We are aware that the people of Afghanistan expect these talks to be concluded as soon as possible. We are aware of their demands at all times, and this time we and our colleagues feel the burden of responsibility at every moment. We are working to advance the talks.”

The opening ceremony of the intra-Afghan negotiations was held on September 12 in Qatar. After this period, the method of these negotiations has not been determined yet and its agenda is unknown.
