Four people have been arrested in Bihar’s Samastipur after a video showing the alleged harassment of a minor girl in public surfaced on social media, police said.
The incident reportedly took place near the embankment bypass road in Jagatsinghpur village, under the Karpurigram police station area. The video drew police attention and led to an investigation.
According to the information available, a minor boy and girl had gone to the area on a motorcycle and were talking when a group of youths allegedly approached them. The boy was reportedly beaten and then left the spot.
The girl was allegedly surrounded by the group after the boy left. The youths are accused of making inappropriate remarks and behaving improperly with her. The video appears to show the girl objecting to their behaviour and asking them to stop.
The group also allegedly questioned the girl about where she lived. When she reportedly said she would call her brother, the youths allegedly made abusive remarks about him.
The incident was recorded on a mobile phone and the video later spread on social media. Police took note of the footage and began efforts to identify those allegedly involved.
Four people have been arrested in connection with the case. They were identified as Rahul Kumar, 19, Awadhesh Paswan, 46, Vikas Sharma, 32, and Rambabu Sahni, 38. Police are questioning them as part of the investigation.
Samastipur Superintendent of Police Arvind Pratap Singh said police acted after taking cognisance of the viral video and directed the concerned police station to register an FIR. Further action will be taken against anyone found responsible, according to the police.
The exact circumstances of the incident, including the complete sequence shown in the video and the individual roles of those seen in it, are being investigated. The authenticity and full context of footage circulating online will also be examined by the authorities.
The Samastipur case has emerged only days after another alleged harassment incident involving minors in Bihar’s Jamui triggered public concern. Police action in both cases has also renewed discussion about the safety of women and girls in public places.
