Indian cricket star Virat Kohli met Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in London on Friday, with the conversation covering sports development, infrastructure and initiatives aimed at creating more opportunities for young people.
The meeting took place during Shinde’s official visit to the UK. According to Shinde, the interaction also touched upon Maharashtra’s ongoing development projects and welfare initiatives.
Speaking to ANI after the meeting, Shinde praised Kohli’s personality and described the former India captain as a “down-to-earth” person. He said he was pleased to meet the cricketer and exchange views on Maharashtra’s future development.
Kohli Shares Ideas on Developing Young Talent
Sports and youth development emerged as an important part of the discussion.
Shinde said Kohli shared his views on how young talent could be identified, encouraged and given better opportunities to compete at higher levels.
The Maharashtra government has been focusing on expanding sports infrastructure and strengthening pathways for young athletes. The state is also expected to benefit from the Centre’s revamped Khelo India framework, which places greater emphasis on grassroots talent identification, training facilities and sports infrastructure.
The discussion with Kohli, one of India’s most successful international cricketers, therefore centred partly on how sporting experience and government support could be brought together to help the next generation.
Infrastructure Projects Also Discussed
The conversation also covered some of Maharashtra’s major infrastructure projects.
Shinde said he spoke about developments including the Atal Setu, Samruddhi Mahamarg, Mumbai Coastal Road and metro projects. The proposed Third Mumbai development around the airport was also among the topics discussed.
Education and healthcare initiatives were also part of the interaction, according to the Deputy Chief Minister.
Shinde has been using his London visit to highlight Maharashtra’s infrastructure, connectivity and investment opportunities. During meetings with UK-based industrialists and entrepreneurs, he also invited businesses to explore investment opportunities in the state, citing its infrastructure network, skilled workforce and improving connectivity.
Shinde Praises Kohli’s Simplicity
While the discussion covered policy and development issues, Shinde also highlighted Kohli’s personal approach during the meeting.
The Deputy Chief Minister said Kohli’s simplicity stood out despite his stature as an international cricket star.
The meeting comes at a time when Kohli continues to remain one of the most prominent names in Indian cricket and has maintained a strong connection with India despite spending considerable time in London.
The interaction between the cricketer and Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister combined discussions on sport and youth development with broader conversations about infrastructure, education, healthcare and the state’s future growth.
For Maharashtra, the meeting also offered an opportunity to connect the experience of one of India’s biggest sporting figures with the government’s efforts to promote sports and nurture emerging talent.
