Nitesh Rane reviews five possible coastal routes; technical survey to assess jetties, water depth, passenger demand and vehicle movement
Sindhudurg: Maharashtra Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane has reviewed a proposal to introduce modern ferryboat services in Sindhudurg district, with the aim of improving inland water transport and supporting tourism and local economic activity. The proposal was discussed at a meeting held at Mantralaya under Rane’s chairmanship. Five possible routes were considered: Karli–Tarkarli, Karli–Mobar–Devbag, Devbag–Nivati, Vijaydurg–Ansure–Dande and Aronda–Kiranpani. Officials have been directed to examine jetty availability, passenger demand, water depth, loading and unloading facilities, vehicle movement and other technical requirements before any route is finalised.
Karli–Tarkarli Route Considered for Pilot
The proposal envisages launching the service on the Karli–Tarkarli route on a pilot basis. According to the preliminary assessment presented at the meeting, the road journey currently takes around two hours, while the proposed ferry service could reduce travel time to about 15 minutes. If technically feasible, the route could benefit local residents, tourists and people travelling between coastal destinations in the district.
Ferry to Carry Passengers and Vehicles
The proposed ferryboat would be approximately 20 metres long and 7.5 metres wide and is expected to carry passengers along with four-wheelers and two-wheelers. The preliminary project estimate for construction of the ferryboat is around ₹4 crore. The vessel would be constructed through a shipyard or another suitable agency in accordance with prescribed technical standards. Companies involved in the proposal presented details relating to construction, operation and maintenance during the meeting.
Government to Retain Control Over Key Operations
According to the proposal, the operator would be responsible for manpower, daily operations, maintenance and other routine requirements. The government would retain control over routes, timings, fares and basic infrastructure, while the proposal also envisages a government role in fuel-related expenditure, Rane said. He directed officials to carry out a detailed technical survey before taking a final decision.
Tourism and Local Economy in Focus
Rane said modern ferry services could make coastal transport more regular and efficient while reducing travel time between certain destinations. He expressed confidence that improved water connectivity could also support tourism and generate additional economic activity in Sindhudurg’s coastal belt. The meeting was attended by Maharashtra Maritime Board Chief Executive Officer Pradeep P., Shantadurga Construction and Equipments proprietor Prashant Venkatesh, Priyesh Kamat, Anup Karnik, Amit Pawdekar, Sahil Desai and other officials.
